What were you expecting to happen, and what actually happened
Various items include skills that upgrade standard gems to big gems, including the Warlord’s Mask (“Upgrade a big gem by II at the start of my turn”). It appears that Paladin shields, which count as standard yellow gems, are eligible for such an “upgrade”. Obviously, that’s a downgrade in many circumstances.
The correct thing would be for special object gems (like shields) to not be eligible for such an upgrade.
How often does this happen? When did it begin happening?
As with any gem selection for an upgrade, this takes some random bad luck to happen, but it does happen enough that I’ve noticed it a few times.
Steps to make it happen again
- Wear Warlord’s Mask
- Cast Paladin ultimate spell; try not to consume the shields produced to allow for a higher likelihood of random selection.
- Watch the gems on each ensuing turn. At some point, you’ll see a shield transform into a big gem (II or higher, depending on the quality of your Mask).
