[Reported] iOS overheating

I’m curious to know what the results of the team’s investigations are so far because as a player it only took me a few minutes of investigation on PC using an overlay to realize that the framerate limiters in the display options aren’t working as they should, on a VRR Freesync monitor when choosing 30 FPS the game actually renders at 72 FPS, when setting it to 60 in the options it actually goes up to 144 FPS but that’s my actual maximum refresh rate so it’s probably higher and on a 60 Hz panel, 30 FPS in the settings renders at actual 60 FPS.
I’ve tried in the past to use a framerate limiter in display drivers (adrenaline chill) but it made the game very choppy, lots of stutter, frame pacing all over the place, unplayable.

I’m not saying there are no others issues but that’s probably a good place to start from.

I know on my ps4 pro, there are several status effect animations that make my system fan rpms start to ramp up, no matter what mode I am playing in. I have noticed that the more “particles” the animation has, the worse it seems to be (like with “smoke” effects and what not). The type of smoke effects around the various “echo” bosses in Season 2.5 seem to put the most strain on my system’s processor. During those battles, the fans sound like a jet engine.

@Jeto FYI The latest update didn’t fix this. Do you have any coders working on this?

Power consumption remains absurdly high on both android phone and ipad – as it’s done ever since I started the game months ago back in season 2.

I did follow this up with the team, and there have been more optimisations released with this update to help with the overheating and framerate bug that was fixed in 3.0.1

It will continue to be something I report on and we are still working on ways we can improve this in future.

Hi @Jeto

Do you have any further updates with this issue?

I have a friend who has a PS4 which is heating up when playing PQ3.

Any further updates is much appreciated.

Cheers,
King Ollie

We have released more optimisations in the past 2 updates which have reduced the otherheating/battery drain issues we have been experiencing and having reported.

Optimisations will likely be ongoing, even if they are not noted here or in patch notes.

If your friend is still experiencing this issue, can you ask them to submit a ticket so I can get any further information for the team?

If anyone else is experiencing overheating on their PS4 set your game to Performance mode - That should also help with device overheating
Pause Menu > Settings > Display Tab > Performance Mode option.

Thanks @Jeto

I will pass this onto them.

I hope nobody will mind if i’ll act as a necromancer and revive this old thread, since the ios overheating issue doesn’t seem to be gone. Or at least was present for the past year since i’ve started playing.
I have several apple devices at my disposal (ipad 2022, ipad mini 2024, iphone 12 pro), android phones and a PC and i have played PQ3 on all of them. And i must say that all apple devices suffer from big battery consumption while playing this game, making the device feel almost hot. I have not experienced anything like this with any other game. On iphone i am able to play for barely one hour before completely draining the battery. With brightness toned down and all graphics options in display settings set to lowest quality.

On ipad mini, which also feels significantly warm (but not as hot as the iphone, probably because od larger body that is more able to transfer heat to its surroundings) the game can be played for 2-3 hours. And the large ipad, probably due to biggest battery capacity, can be used up to 3-4 hours of gameplay.

In all cases, charging while playing usually halts at some moment because of the device temperature being too high.

Here i have to say that the performance option in display settings that probably helped to tackle the same issue on android devices and PS is not available in the ios version. Why is that?

Is the developement team still trying to do something about the issue, or are we simply forced to live with that due to insufficient capacity on devs side?

It is listed in our known issues as it is something we are constantly working on in the background.

Thank you for the answer. I’m aware of it being in the know issues list, but since there was not much talk about it since the 3.1.5. which came out last year, it gives an impression that it was stalled.
Also regarding the missing option for performance mode on iOS. Does it mean the HW/SW of iOS devices doesn’t allow to use this particular fix that was used for other devices?

The mobile equivalent for this are the settings that exist, the console version is like a consolidation of these but specific to what can be adjusted on console.

So, lowering the graphic quality, disabling high-quality shadows, disabling variable FPS etc

Hmm. I wonder why are the settings available in the android version then if you say they are mean for consoles. But ok, it seems i will try to play around with the settings a bit more and compare the results. Because at least with the ios version, i have a feeling that it looks and moves too good even with lowest quality settings. So i want to test whether the options have any effect on the output.
