Jeto has said in the past that this is not a bug and intentional game design.

Being in the Tavern is the same as being in combat, the “home screen” Tavern is treated as an instance and subject to the 30 minute rule for closure and disconnection for inactivity. So, if a player does not leave the Tavern (start a combat anywhere) in 30 minutes once the Tavern is entered, the game rules that the player is not being active enough to maintain the server connection and drops the player.

Jeto did say that this was brought up for consideration with the Team (perhaps to extend the timer for the player while in the Tavern before disconnection), but as far as I remember there was no further feedback from the Team for Jeto to provide to us on the matter.

Hey, Jeto did a quite detailed fresh write up about this as a quality of life request not too long ago to bump it up on the radar.

I don’t have any updates currently, but I’ve added it to my list of “most recent important community type things to keep track of and poke people about”. Disclaimer: I don’t actually have a list called that, it’s just how I’m paraphrasing for this post

I’m not in The Tavern when it’s happened to me. I’ve been on the Gear Screen sorting loadouts and it definitely wasn’t 30 minutes since my last battle.

Maybe it’s a bug specific to the PS5/PS4 as that’s the platform both Kush and I use?

I play on an Android phone and one thing I have noticed is that if I play the game and then turn the screen off or use another app for almost 30 minutes I can come back to pq3 and it goes through the full load screen but I get kicked for inactivity within a couple of minutes. No idea if this happens every time or occasionally but I am 100% sure it has happened.

This happens for me too.

Was also in the citadel for a long time last night and had it time out. While I know you say the 30-minute timeout is something you guys have coded… there has to be a better way of doing this. It is obnoxious.

What events reset this timer?
Have you guys looked into the extremely long loading times for the Kingdom screen? My guess is this is because there is a sync happening due to it being a multiuser area of the game.

You are still in the Tavern. Any non-combat game functionality takes place in the Tavern as some kind of catch-all location for all non-combat activities to occur. The UI that the player sees may change from screen to screen, such as to manipulate inventory, spells, or access guild functionality, so it may look like the player changes game locations. But as far as the server is concerned (which is what matters here), the player remains within the same instance the entire time.

On the 30 min rule, I agree with everyone here. There are all sorts of shenanigans regarding how the server counts 30 mins in the Tavern and there’s a bunch of ways to strangely cause the server to throw an inactivity error or an actual error code if in the kingdom screen. No clue on what causes this, as it has to be an internal issue with the servers.

AFAIK, only starting a combat instance resets the inactivity timer. I’m presuming that it is not currently possible to place a separate extended inactivity timer on the Tavern or to reset the Tavern inactivity timer when a player changes UI screens in the Tavern for technical reasons, else Jeto would have said something on the matter by now.

I think it might be the same as when u get a match error and restart the game. The game picks up in combat right where u left off. Its probably like that with inactivity. So the game knows u were 20 minutes inactive last time you were on, giving you a much shorter window when u get back on and leaving people confused as to why they got kicked.

I see. I thought you meant The Tavern as shown on the interface where the respective Followers, Minions and Goals sections reside.

The strangest thing about the “inactivity” issue is that the game obviously doesn’t register keypresses or controller movement as “activity”. This is the only game I can recall in my entire life where I’ve encountered it, but then it’s the only server-based game I’ve spent any lengthy amount of time with.

It’s rediculous that a chest open, upgrade a spell, salvage gear, etc., does not reset an inactivity timer. Are we supposed to belive a database is not edited from that activity?
