What's a better use of mythic relics?

If I have 4 Serpentine relics, is it better to hone my Serpentine ring by 1 pip?

Or refine 4 Serpentine rings to mythic, and then use those 4 rings to refine the quality of my main Serpentine ring?

Well. If we only look at the mythic relic “cost”, you get exactly the same improvements by using 4 relics to hone 1 tier and by using 1 relic to refine rarity of a piece in order to refine quality by +5%. So oversimplifying it, it would be better to use the relics for the second option.

Now, the real scenarios aren’t so simple. There are several reasons why that second option isn’t so good as it may appear at the beginning:

  • Refining rarity also requires 1 glyph, 1 mythic item and 1k ore, which is not a cheap cost.
  • Refining rarity completely uses the relic, while honing just “locks” it. If you replace the item, the relics used on honing can be recovered, but the ones used on the refine rarity path cannot.
  • Refining quality requires a good knowledge of the forge system and the build you want, and it can easily result in a waste of resources if you don’t understand it correctly or if things change which make certain builds no longer suitable.
  • Eventually you would like to get both max quality and honing. If you use mythic relics for both it will take longer than, for example, using relics only for honing and improve quality by farming for mythics and/or crafting them.

So, in my opinion, using relics on the refine rarity path is good for seasonal items that cannot be crafted and whose relics are easy to get. Otherwise, I would just save mythic relics for honing and refine quality with dups from chests, rewards or crafts.

So, seasonal gear yes, normal gear no?

In my opinion, that should be safe to use as general rule, yes.
